What do professional declutterers actually do?

There is a perception that as declutterers we mainly work with hoarders, or that our clients are a particular type of person.

Well, we're here to reassure you that in fact we work with a very wide range of customers and you absolutely don't have to be a hoarder to hire us. So why do people hire us and what sorts of projects do we get involved with with?

Well, firstly, we all lead busy lives these days - we know that sometimes it's hard just to keep on top of all the every day things that need doing. Working, taking care of a family, hobbies, pets, all take time and energy. Weekends fly by and there never seems to be enough time to get everything done. It's all too easy isn't it to just put things away in the shed (or spare room, or loft, or garage) as a temporary measure, meaning to sort them out sometime, but just never quite getting around to it...

Add to that a special situation or a change in circumstances - the birth of a new baby, a child leaving home for university, downsizing or moving house, becoming a carer for an elderly relative, or even becoming ill yourself - suddenly the everyday jobs of keeping on top of paperwork, sorting, and organising become even more of a challenge.

As professional declutterers we see it as our job to help you deal with all those things you've been putting off.  Yes we can help with all those garages, sheds and lofts that need sorting, all those kitchen cupboards (yes even the ones where you're not even sure what's in there anymore!), all those hidden corners of  your home that need a sort out. We can even help you go through that big pile of unopened envelopes just sitting there on the kitchen sideboard...

You can think of us an extra pair of hands (actually two pairs of hands...) to help you tackle all those little jobs that simply need doing.

One of the things we love about this job is that no two days are ever the same - so one day we might be clearing out a big old barn, the next day we might be helping a client sort out her summer wardrobe. We really don't mind - we're happy to help with just about anything! (And we're even quite good at putting together flat pack furniture)

It's worth saying too that some clients hire us just as a one off, others prefer it if we visit on more of a regular basis - either way is fine and we're always happy to have a chat about your needs.

If your project is more involved, perhaps you're downsizing from a large family home to a retirement cottage in the country, or perhaps you're moving house for work and just want your new home to be up and running as efficiently as possible, then we can help with that too. We can help you sort, declutter, and pack before the move - and we can get everything organised afterwards so that you can just relax and enjoy your gorgeous new home without being surrounded by unopened packing boxes.

Now having said all of that - what if you are in fact a bit of a hoarder? What if picking up the odd charity shop bargain has become a regular habit? What if the pile of papers on the table is now spilling over onto the floor? What if the spare room has become so full of stuff that you're not even sure what's in there anymore? Well, that's okay too. We can help you find a way through the clutter so that you can reclaim your space. We promise to work with you in a supportive way to help you tackle the problem while never feeling judged and we promise you'll feel so much better afterwards!

When we meet new clients for the first time, we often find that they apologise for the state of their homes. Please don't! We never care how messy it is, we are truly happy to help, after all that's what we're there for.

We really enjoy what we do and we love to see the look on a satisfied clients face when we finish a job. So many times people tell us that they feel better after a good decluttering session - they feel lighter, freer, less muddled....that's a great feeling for them and a great feeling for us.

We firmly believe that the place you live should also be a place where you feel comfortable, and where you can truly relax - so for us decluttering is not about creating an Instagram perfect image , it's about creating a sense of "home". Whether your home is a one bedroomed flat or a Cotswolds mansion, we think it deserves to be shown some love.

Our style of working is very pragmatic and down to earth. We bring lots of energy to what we do but can be sensitive too - we'll never make you throw something away that's precious but we might encourage you to let go of something that we really think has seen better days. Rest assured we're never judgemental - our clients are often relieved to find that we are pretty nice actually, and we will never say no to a good cup of tea.

So if you've been putting off calling us either because you don't feel like "the hoarder next door" or because you're embarrassed about the state of your kitchen cupboards, then please don't. Big or small, we're happy to help.

If you'd like to have a chat with us to find out more about what we do and how we could help, that's absolutely fine. If you're local to us we're always happy to pop in and have a look at what needs doing so that we can give you an estimate.

If you're further afield you could always book us for an initial consultation for just £25, we can visit you on site and then send you our recommendations afterwards for you to keep whether you decide to hire us or not.

Don't forget to keep in touch with us on Facebook or Instagram, and if you found this article helpful please share it with anyone you know who might benefit from our services.

Happy decluttering, Sue & Claire xx
